Algae Farm

SD-CAB's test facility, operated by Biolight and Carbon Capture Corporation, is located on 40 acres in California's Imperial Valley.

    The facility includes:
  • Offices, laboratories, and a warehouse
  • 11 ponds, called "raceways," each containing more than 200,000 gallons of water
  • 30 smaller-scale raceways, with 100 to 60,000 gallons each

View the photos below to see our algae farm in action.

Algae grow in raceway ponds of various sizes. This 40,000-gallon pond is one of the smaller raceways.

Algae get their start in large Sun Tubes. Note the stepstool in the photo for a size comparison.

As algae strains grow, we move them to small, 100-gallon raceway ponds.

This 40,000-gallon raceway contains Spirulina algae.

Two separate algae strains, Dunaliella (left), and Spirulina, are markedly different in appearance.
