Thank you to all of the speakers, sponsors, poster presenters, attendees, volunteers, and staff who made this event such a success. We had a great opportunity to hear from researchers around the country, including some of our CAB-Comm collaborators, about their recent work using genetics and genomics, and molecular and synthetic biology to increase productivity of lipids and proteins from photosynthetic organisms to create biofuel and bioproducts. This year's industry speakers presented on expanding and developing the markets for different bioproducts, and the recent challenges and accomplishments that have come with scaling up production facilities and reaching commercial levels. The social and global impact of this technology was also discussed and how it can be greatly impactful depending on how and where it is deployed. It was also a pleasure to have California State Senator Ben Hueso as a guest speaker to discuss the importance of implementing policies that facilitate the expansion of the algae and plant biotechnology sector and to increase its presence as a realistic sustainable food and fuel alternative. The annual Food and Fuel for the 21st Century Symposium is not only a chance to share recent research updates and the latest technology innovations, but also an occasion to discuss, connect, and collaborate with like-minded people all striving to find solutions to some of the world's resource challenges. We are happy to provide a space for students to learn more about biofuels and bioproducts, and for people in the biotechnology field to network with other companies and find common areas for cooperation. Thank you again to all those who attended the 2013 Food and Fuel for the 21st Century Symposium - Expanding the Opportunities. As Dr. Stephen Mayfield said, the solutions to our food and fuels challenges will come out of meetings like this. |
